Today, psoriasis is a common chronic skin condition which typically leaves patches of raised red skin with silvery scales. This is becomingly common among people and it usually occurs on elbows, keens, scalp and trunk while it can also affect nails causing it to become thick and irregular shape. Psoriasis is not a contagious. We still have to figure out how it actually developed but we do know some of the main reasons for the cause appear to result from a combination of genetic, immunologic, and environmental factors.

Symptoms of Psoriasis of Nails:

The following are some of the signs or symptoms of nail psoriasis:

  1. Clear yellow or reddish nail colouring which looks like drop of oil or blood under the nail plate, this condition of psoriasis is called salmon patch or oil drop.
  2. Tiny pits in the nail or pitting of nail matrix. This condition is developed when the nails surface loses cells.
  3. Lines which appear side to side across the nails which are known as beau lines of the nail.
  4. Skin getting thick under the nail leading to weakening of nails. Medically know as Subungual hyperkeratosis.
  5. Nail plate with white areas. This is called as midmatrix or leukonychia disease.
  6. Crumbling of the nail becoming weak and brittle.
  7. The nail develops a white area, where the nail gets separated from the skin underneath causing the nail bed to get infected.
  8. Small black lines appearing on the nails. These are called dilated tortuous or hemorrhage capillaries.
  9. Bottom of your nails become red near the arched area. This condition is known as spotted lunula.

Medications for Nails Psoriasis:

Nail Psoriasis Treatment

After the doctor understands the situation of the psoriasis, he will then start the treatment accordingly. These mostly include –

  1. Creams and ointment which need to be applied on an around your nails. Anti-fungal solutions can be included if infections is found.
  2. Steroids can be applied or injected under the nail. Steroid injections can be more effective.
  3. PUVA is a well known therapy used for treating nail psoriasis. It is a combination of psoralen, prescribed medications and exposure to ultraviolet light UVA.

Prevention of Psoriasis of Nails:

Prevention is very difficult for nail psoriasis as it is mostly hereditary. However, prevention is necessary for eruption of nail psoriasis. You can follow the below healthy tips –

  1. Keep your nails dry.
  2. Keep your finger and toe nails short by cutting them regularly.
  3. Try to wear gloves to protect nails when doing any manual work.
  4. Avoid manicuring the base of your nails as it can result in infection.
  5. Nail varnish might be used to cover pitting of nails. But avoid varnishes with acetone, since it might cause damage to your nails.
  6. Do not use any sharp objects to clean the debris under your nails as this can worsen the condition. You may soak your nails in warm soapy water to remove the debris.
  7. Rub moisturizers into the nail cuticles or soak the nails in emollient oils to improve the condition.

You can feel a bit embarrassed with nail psoriasis but with proper treatment, you can get back your confidence.
