catalina 270 review

This boat looks like new with in-furling main and furling jib. This year, I made the move to my next larger boat, a Catalina 270. I had to add a mast-raising system, but with the online owners groups there were lots of ideas and instructions to put one together. The standard factory jib tracks were on the cabin top. Catalina Yachts 21200 Victory Boulevard Woodland Hills, CA 91367 We’d rather see separate handrails. Though hard to judge in such strong, shifting winds, we think the Beneteau had the edge in sailing speed, as her statistics would indicate. The table has plenty of room for the crew to eat, or the leaves can be folded for added legroom around the table, or removed entirely and stowed  when preferred. There’s a small nav station at one end of the couches and a full size electrical panel. Helping to make sailing the Catalina a no-hassle experience is an impressive array of standard equipment not seen on the Beneteau: A double-ended mainsheet, adjustable either at a cam cleat on the traveler car or at a cabin top stopper, where a winch can be used; a pair of two-speed Lewmar self-tailing #30s (compared to Beneteau’s single speed #16s); a standard 135-percent genoa on a goodquality Hood single-line furler (compared to Beneteau’s standard 100-percent jib and furler hardware available only as an option); a total of five cabintop stoppers (vs. three for the Beneteau); Dutchman mainsail flaking system; and single-line reefing (though the Catalina test boat did not have single-line reefing rigged). Please note that the purpose of these reviews is educational, to help you discern the differences in quality among boats generally. The inside track would supposedly allow the boat to point higher, so I may figure out a way to reroute the jib sheets when sailing close-hauled, but so far I have been happy with her pointing ability. On the Catalina, the impression is of a more basic, but much lighter and equally airy boat. The plastic turned a nice sun damaged yellow over time, and appears to get brittle. Neither is a racehorse likely to win much in competition. It has an L-Shaped Galley with a gimballed stove, 2.2 Cu Foot Ice Box and a sink. Still, we question what will happen to the deck when someone falls against a stanchion; four through-bolts and large backing plates to distribute the load would be better. Our lake (Utah Lake) is a large but shallow lake. We learned to sail, progressing from lake sailing to chartering in the British Virgin Islands. She sails well in light air, so even when the wind drops to 3 knots the boat will still ghost along at a knot or more. Righting moment comes from a flooding system that permits the double bottom of the boat to be filled with seawater, which is emptied when it comes time to leave the water and winch the vessel back onto the … At the moment, PHRF for the Beneteau is 168. I can leave the wheel and step forward in the cockpit to do most tasks. In contrast, the Beneteau seats no more than seven at the dock, and that assumes that one passenger is seated atop the traveler and the tiller is swung up out of the way. The rear full bed in the aft cabin is comfortable and roomy for a boat this size. Late in the summer the marinas can be a little shallow, which could shorten the sailing season for a deeper-draft vessel. The Catalina 270 LE vs. I chose Catalina because I had great experiences dealing with them on my previous boat. In reality, there’s not enough space to unroll even a small chart on the work surface presented, which is effectively cut in two by a fiddle across its middle. This configuration provides an interesting draft / low … The Catalina easily wins the Ladder Sweepstakes with a four-step, 24-inch wide ladder with flat plastic treads, compared to the Beneteau’s three-step, 8-1/2-inch wide ladderI with treads only 1-1/4-inch wide, tW made by flattening the stainless tubing a bit. The Catalina 27 is a 26’10” (8.18m) cruising sailboat designed by Frank Butler (United States) and Robert Finch (United States). Con 1 – Cabin top winches. The wood is set off on both boats by neatly made upholstery on berths and settees, on the Catalina by a combination of Ultrasuede-like material and light patterned cotton fabrics, on the Beneteau by a practical and soft dark green velvet. Catalina’s use of wood is sparing (varnished teak doors and trim, teak dining table, small patch of maple and teak sole forward), while Beneteau’s is lavish (varnished cherry bulkheads and trim, full teak sole). Frank Butler launched his first Catalina 22 in July of 1969, by 1975 he had built 5,000 of the 22's and introduced the Catalina 27 and the Catalina 30 (the best selling 30 of all time). Beyond the ventilating prop problem, the reason is mostly economic: By the time Beneteau buyers acquire the outboard engine and associated paraphernalia, the difference between inboard and outboard shrinks to around $3,500-and those who opt for the outboard miss the shore power option and electric hot water heater option which Beneteau throws in” free” with the inboard package. I love sharing what I'm learning along the way and helping others get into sailing. And that doesn’t include a pair of “observation seats” built into each corner of the push pit. Both boats have swim platforms and stainless swing-down swim ladders. The aft berth on the Beneteau measures 60″ x 77″, and you sleep parallel to the keel; the Catalina is slightly narrower at 57 inches wide, is 74 inches to 86 inches long depending on which side you’re on, and you sleep athwartships. Launched in 1971, the Catalina 27 has been a popular favourite, enjoying the kind of commercial success that’s led to one of the longest and largest production runs of its era spanning 22 years and 6,600 boats. To some extent, the choice between the Beneteau 2 65 and the Catalina 270 LE is a trade off between elegant French styling on the one hand, and no-nonsense American practicality on the other. One engaging aspect of sailing is learning. Every year before we change the clocks for daylight savings time we do a year in review of the mechanics and cosmetic changes to our incredible sailboat. On both boats we would prefer better inspection ports to view these crucial joints. The Catalina’s 32-inch stainless steel destroyer wheel on a pedestal is an Edson, a brand we associate with high quality and reliability. Both boats do well in heavy air. I'll take … Most of all, we like the Catalina’s greater value for the money-not just because the overall price is about 10 percent lower than a comparable Beneteau, but because of the better choice of standard items. An upgrade was in order. The security of being self-reliant in the smallest package is a nice image. The Beneteau has the edge on locker space, with three separate hanging lockers (including one open-air unit in the head), and a liquor cabinet under what a Beneteau brochure describes as a nav station. This can make it extremely inconvenient to fill the tank when line and chain are piled overt he cap. The Catalina 270 had just such an interior, along with enough headroom for standing. The size and placement is good for steering from either a sitting or standing position; brake and compass binnacle (4- inch Danforth Constellation) are standard; pedestal-mounted brackets for additional instruments such as depth sounder and speedo are extra. The boat came with excellent snap-on bug screens for the companionway and forward hatch which keep the bugs out and the fresh breeze flowing. I have made several single handed trips, and find that the extra winches, combined with the boat’s steady balance, makes single handing safe and simple. Although the Catalina’s mast is shorter and its mainsail is smaller, the foretriangle height is two feet longer than the Beneteau’s, resulting in more total sail area when setting a big genoa. The bow berth has a great view out the forward hatch which acts as a skylight at night. People who are more style and performance conscious, however, may prefer the classy accouterments of the Beneteau, and fall in love with her despite its other shortcomings. Deeper is relative, I still wanted a shoal drafted boat, something less than 4 feet. Membership in the discussion forum is free but regulated. The Catalina 27 is as well listed, on Boat-Specs.com, in Wing keel and Tall rig version (see all the versions compared). We will bring her home in ... We are compensated for referring traffic and business to Amazon and other companies linked to on this site, it helps defray the cost of sailing a bit. She was built between 1971 and 1991 by Catalina Yachts (United States) with 6662 hulls completed. The Beneteau has a slightly shorter LOA but longer LWL (length waterline), and a nearly plumb bow. It’s really annoying. Interior Appeal. In a Catalina 25 swing keel this was not a problem because we could just raise the keel and still get out to deeper water. Beneteau bills itself as the largest sailboat company in the world; Catalina lays claim to being the largest in the U.S. The Beneteau interior gives an impression of good craftsmanship, above-average but not consummately executed, and a dark though pleasantly airy cabin. Patience paid off, I was able to find a boat whose previous owner had taken excellent care of everything. Catalina continued to offer an outboard option until 1989. (Among other problems, in a seaway an outboard prop tends to ventilate too much). In contrast, the Beneteau has only four stanchions, less than 18 inches high, with single lifelines. Sailboat and sailing yacht searchable database with more than 8,000 sailboats from around the world including sailboat photos and drawings. Both test boats have inboards. The Catalina’s is not yet determined, but we would anticipate it will come in around the 195-205 range. Starting in the 90’s, manufacturers opened up the floorplan, foregoing bulkheads for large wraparound seating. Actually, the condition of the vent was not the thing that precipitated the upgrade, it was the damm spiders,… Continue reading → I created this video with the YouTube Video Editor (http://www.youtube.com/editor) On both boats, the pulpits and stanchions are fastened to the deck with a single large threaded stud, projecting down through the deck and secured with a large washer and nut. Other features on deck also favor the Catalina. Screens for the ports (but not for either the forward or main hatch) are standard on both the Catalina and the Beneteau. This make for a comfortable ride on the water. Con 2 – Cabin-top jib track. Perry Design Review: Catalina 250. freshwater-cooled; no engine tach or fuel gauge vs. both standard; 8.25-gallon fuel tank vs. 14 gallons; 16.25-gallon water tank vs. 26 gallons; holding tank 11.5 gallons vs. 18; single-speed #16 self-tailing Lewmars vs. two-speed #30 STs; a 1.6- gpm Shurflo pressure water pump vs. a 2.8-gpm Shurflo pump: a gimbaled two-burner non-pressure alcohol stove vs. a gimbaled two-burner LPG stove, and so on. Other boat manufacturers’ designs in this size range did not appeal to me as much as do Catalina’s. The Catalina’s Perkins also was smoother and quieter, despite the fact that its engine box (two removable clam-shells back to back, of fiberglass-foam sandwich construction) had no added insulation, while the Beneteau’s plywood box was lined with soft foam. Performance. The mast is stepped on a hinge for lowering the spar at bridges, trailer ramps, or for maintenance, but Beneteau says use of the hinge is not recommended without side-sway preventers- currently available as an option in Europe, but not in the U.S. New members are now set to moderated as a result non-boating related postings from new members. The rigs of the two boats may appear quite similar at first glance, but upon close inspection a number of important differences emerge. Catalina 275 Sport Review: Affordable, Easy, Smart, and Fun. Two of the newest 27-foot cruising boat designs are from Beneteau and Catalina, both huge builders. (Of interest to “Buy America” advocates is the fact that both boats are built in the U.S., the Catalina in Woodland Hills, California, and the Beneteau in Marion, South Carolina.). The Catalina 28 Used Boat Review Posted March 28, 2017 While it’s certainly great fun cruising on small boats, there comes a time in many sailors’ lives when they long for the comfort of double berths, hot water, a decent size ice box, standing headroom, and a shower you don’t have to hang in the rigging. This impressed us. Find Catalina 270 boats for sale in your area & across the world on YachtWorld. Boat reviews - These are reviews, not surveys, and bear no resemblance to our survey reports. Engine. Above that, a partially furled jib and reefed main will take me up to about 30. The Beneteau ropes off the transom area with a length of lifeline and a pelican hook. I like the swim deck on the sugar scoop transom which makes swimming easy. We have no objection to tillers-in fact we generally prefer them in this size boat-provided there’s no noticeable drag in the rudder tube and that the forward end is a comfortable height over the sole. I have only seen her for 10 minutes in the snow, and some pictures from the PO. What started as lessons with my kids has turned into sailing certifications, a captain's license, and a life long hobby that takes us sailing all over the world. See the full specifications for more details. The Catalina 270 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass. In 1982 the Catalian 36, 1994 the Catalina 400, 2002 the Catalina 350, and by July of 2004 900 Catalina … Having owned a Catalina 270 for about 8 years now, and having upgraded most of the systems to reasonably current technology, we’d say this boat is a pleasure to sail. On mine, a previous owner had installed a second set of jib tracks on the side decks. But, unfortunately, moving the track forward isn’t feasible because of the long companionway bridge deck, which reaches forward beyond the boom’s midpoint. Catalina’s chief engineer, Gerry Douglas, doesn’t think it’s suitable for a 27- footer, especially one weighing 6,400 pounds-and, he says, neither did most buyers of Catalina 27s over the last several years. This opens the space between main and jib, and allows the jib’s draft to have more options. All boats are compromises, and personal taste and prejudices do enter the picture. It’s a very classic looking boat with a white hull and blue trim. In short, we wouldn’t hesitate to sail either boat in dusty weather. We’d also prefer to see the Beneteau’s cockpit mounted mainsheet traveler track moved forward onto the cabintop (as the Catalina is configured), so crew moving from cockpit to cabin don’t have to dodge the mainsheet and car. The Catalina is heavier, more stable, roomier, better equipped, and has a lower price tag. Unfortunately, the Beneteau failed both tests, even with the height adjustment screw at the rudder head in the extreme “down” position. The boat is very well-behaved, she balances easily and will easily hold her course while stepping away from the wheel for various tasks. No matter how well the spreader ends are protected, and whether you use ready-made vinyl spreader boots or conventional rigging tape, water will get through to the fittings inside. Pocket Cruiser By Bob Perry. I remember at 14 years old "lofting," with my mother's yarn, a 14-foot pocket cruiser on the floor of our living room. The Catalina’s ladder swings up to form the center part of the push pit, a clever and neat-looking design. I think sailors begin dreaming of their next larger size boat about 1 year after purchasing their last next larger boat. How frequently do you bother removing spreader boots and taping to check the condition of the spreaders and rigging? It has a masthead sloop rig, an internally-mounted spade-type rudder and a fixed fin keel. (A tall rig is optional.). The Catalina 27 is a 26’10” (8.18m) cruising sailboat designed by Frank Butler (United States) and Robert Finch (United States). The original configuration only had cabin top winches which made single handing a little cumbersome. Both have highly engineered force grids molded into their hull liners, of particular note since the shrouds in both boats lead not to traditional chainplates but to intermediate tie rods which in turn are joined to metal plates for the most part hidden behind interior liners. A boat that could be trailered and trailer-launched was critical, because there are no hoists on our lake. Still, Beneteau, with a 4,800-lb. The Catalina also suffers from lack of sufficient galley top working space. Accommodations often become spacious enough for two couples or a family of four to live aboard for a couple of weeks without strain. The Wing keel version is offered with a short keel fitted with large winglets. The Catalina 270 was designed to provide rewarding performance and comfortable accommodations for the active sailing family. Since we don’t overnight that often, it’s less important to have a boat divided into separate cabins, as was popular in trailerable sailboats from the 70’s and 80’s. This beautiful Catalina 270 Luxury Edition (LE) was designed by Gerry Douglas and built in 1996. (We’d prefer a set of conventional-and more easily adjustable and replaceable turnbuckles.) For example, note the differences between some of the Beneteau’s items and the Catalina’s: 9-hp. Neither the Catalina nor the Beneteau forward berths have these problems. For example, on the Catalina the entrance to the double aft is via a solid teak door, whereas on the Beneteau it is through a sliding curtain. Speaking of light, the interior is very bright and open, with translucent skylight panels on the cabin top to bring even more light in. The only rea downsides are a lack of storage, (to be expected in a 27 footer) and the steering gear cover in the aft berth. We’d like to see Catalina restudy the process to make set-up easier. I could almost sail that in my bathtub. outboard for those who wish to go this route. Moving further aft, the Catalina’s six stanchions are fitted with double lifelines and, being 24-:3/4 inches off the deck, give a good measure of security. When reselling a boat one never gets out of it all that went in to upgrades, so additions that came with the boat are a great bargain. Electrical. The sails and canvas are in excellent condition and the interior is very clean. These overall similarities make the differences between the designs more obvious. Call 800/959-7245 for thousands of parts for your favorite Catalina. And the combination bow light is mounted directly behind and partly obscured by the center support of the pulpit. If we were buying the Beneteau, we’d insist that she be retrofitted with taller stanchions. Learning. The Catalina 270 LE vs. The Catalina 275 Sport packs a lot of value and performance in a small, easy-to-manage sailboat. April 30, 2014. Both boats have anchor lockers built into the forward deck, but the Beneteau’ s locker has a water tank fill cap in its bottom. So did the Catalina, which was at least as stable on a breezier day (wind 20-25, occasional gusts to 30) with full sail, only burying the rail once in a particularly vicious wind burst. So far, few buyers have. Contact the listing broker to see her today! The interior layouts on the two boats are quite similar: large double berth aft galley to port next to the companionway, head opposite the galley, Ushaped dining area around a smallish table supported by the mast compression post and V-berth forward. All rights reserved. Here’s the thing about Kate. She is priced to sell fast and ready for a new home. There is no fixed ballast, and for tracking the boat relies on an unweighted centerboard. Canvas & Covers. Beam and Displacement. Catalina 28 International Association Visit the Catalina 28 Class Association. Catalina succeeded the long lasting design with an all-new water-ballasted and trailerable weekender, the Catalina 270. Although this design is somewhat non-traditional, it seems solid enough. In 1991, Catalina discontinued production of the 27 and replaced it with a completely redesigned boat; the Catalina 270. I'm Mike, the guy behind Unsinkable 2. The Catalina 250 is a flooding-water-ballast trailerable boat. The majority of our sailing trips are evenings or Saturdays, with a few overnights each year. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD, last fall: Small is beautiful. The Catalina’s masthead rig, even with double spreaders (permitting use of a lighter spar than the Beneteau), is more conventional. About this Sailboat: This is a fresh water only Catalina 270 LE. Which boat, we wondered, is the better buy, and for whom? Hello all, I look forward to diving in: I was just gifted a 1976 Catalina 27 (helluva gift!). With the addition of the outside jib tracks (the original design has jib tracks on the coach roof) there is lots of room for sail tuning. As already mentioned, both boats use Lewmar winches. And when the wind kicks up into the upper teams, she heels gently and really picks up speed. So in no particular order, here are the features and factors I considered. I loved my Catalina 25, it was the perfect boat for us for nearly a decade. Catalina Direct, publishers of the Catalina 22 and Catalina 25 Owner's Handbooks and the largest supplier of parts and Lewmar winches for Catalina Yachts in the country. Neither boat has a rollup sunshade over the forward hatch, which would be a nice touch. For ventilation, the Catalina has six opening ports plus a forward hatch, while the Beneteau has eight plus a forward hatch. The Catalina’s lightness is helped by a skylight of milk-white Plexiglas (two layers thick) abaft the mast, and more area in the main cabin ports. The Catalina 270 is a beamy boat at 9’6″, with the beam carried aft. The cockpit is actually large enough for 8 adults to sit while day sailing. If I were rating the Catalina 270, she’d get 5 stars. The forward berth on the Beneteau measures 19 inches at the front, 76 inches at the back, and is 88 inches long. Both boats utilize external bolt-on lead keels, suitably thick fiberglass lay-up schedules, solid glass hulls and balsacored decks, and reasonably strong hull-deck connections. The Beneteau has more stowage lockers, faster acceleration, and French-favored rather than California favored Eurostyle. This make for a comfortable ride on the water. Ok, maybe not cannons. Catalina does not offer an outboard option as it once did with its old 27. There is a marine head with shower. The head has a fiberglass shell that make cleaning simple. Below, both boats use some wood to visually warm up the otherwise mostly white interior. In this post I’m not comparing the Catalina 25 with the Catalina 270, they’re different boats. In searching forums and blogs for the down sides of Catalina 270’s, I found the following. From the outset she was designed to be affordable (some have even said cheap) for weekend excursions, club racing and coastal cruising – offshore work was always outside of the design scope. Fighting Off Marine Electrical System Corrosion. The thorough taping job you did on the spreader ends may actually accelerate the problem by holding in water. Catalina 270 Cons. There are twin anchor rollers at the stemhead (one on the Beneteau). In a head-to-head comparison of entry level inboard cruisers, we think the lower price and practicality of the Catalina favors it over the glitter and gloss of the Beneteau. I have been looking at the B & C and your article cleared up many questions I had. I like the lines of a Catalina 270. I want to focus more on why I chose a Catalina 270 (1993) as the antidote for debilitating case of bigger-boat-itis. Design credit for the Catalina 27 goes to Frank Butler and Robert Finch. And hull speed with appropriate sail and engine power typically permits average-weather runs of 35 to 40 miles in an 8-hour day-long enough legs to satisfy the wanderlust of most cruisers. It displaces 6,400 lb (2,903 kg) and carries 2,000 lb (907 kg) of ballast. That’s a tough choice, with as many opinions as there are manufacturers. Sailing for Fun. We usually don’t have that many sitting in the cockpit, with the wide side decks and comfortable interior, crew usually spread out while sailing with some sitting on the bow, some below, some in the cockpit, and some on the stern rail seats. On the Catalina, there’s room for nine at the dock, as big a cockpit as could be desired in this size boat. Hope you enjoy 60 seconds of sailing races, overnight voyages, and windy June sailing on Utah Lake. Bareboat Charter Planning: British Virgin Islands. The Beneteau features a seven eighths rig with single spreaders, adjustable split backstay, mast stepped on deck with compression strut in the cabin, and shrouds tied into a force grid molded into the cabin top via a set of studs threaded into a patented configuration involving stem balls set into bronze plates.
